width=265Our thoughts and prayers go with you, Paddy!

Patrick Broderick (Paddy) is 80 years of age, and has spent at least 60 of them serving the Church in various parishes, the Knights of da Gama, and the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

He, and his beloved late wife of more than 50 years, Maureen, diligently practised their Catholic faith. They raised six children while, at the same time, working for the Poor through their activities in the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

Paddy’s life has been spent serving his Faith, his family and his friends, most of whom are fellow Vincentians and Knights. Even at 80, Paddy still spends part of every day helping the Poor. He is a well-known sight driving about Durban in the “Paddy Wagon”, delivering food parcels which he has helped to pack as president/packer and driver for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Conference in Umbilo, Durban. He also does all the bulk food acquisitions.

Paddy has always been characterised by his “hustle and bustle”, and for getting things done. His network enables him to produce any needed article – from a wheel-chair to a wardrobe, from a bed to a bassinette, and from a food parcel to a flywheel. He can produce anything, at any time. It may be well used, but it will do the job. His resourcefulness is renowned.

He used to be known for often being late for meetings or appointments. But this was invariably the result of his having stopped on the road to help someone in distress. Arthritis, and replacement of various joints has taken its toll, and he no longer has the mobility and strength to do so. One benefit, at least, is that he is now always on time!

Sadly for us all in SA, our time with Paddy, but not his friendship, will soon end as a new chapter in his life starts. In June he will emigrate to the USA where his daughter Debbie and her family live. No doubt he will soon join or establish an SSVP Conference.

Paddy is the embodiment of St Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, Chapter 13. It would be difficult to find a person who better personifies Paul’s definition of love in Verse 4:

“Love is patient and kind; it is not conceited or jealous or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up; and its faith, hope and patience never fail”.

And Verse 13: “Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope and love; and the greatest of these is love.”  THAT is Paddy!
